13-year-old witch Duncan Dowitcher knows his potions, isn’t allowed to say incantations without supervision, and despite just becoming a teenager, he still can’t use active magic. He’s just about ready to give up on his powers ever showing up — something about puberty and being “a late bloomer” — when his best friend from India, Zeeshan, distracts him by agreeing to be his boyfriend.
 
Then, on the night of his 13th birthday, Duncan’s parents reveal that he’s been accepted into Underworld Academy, a magic school in the Netherworld for all cryptid species, hoping to develop his inactive magic. Unfortunately for him, he’s supposed to start on Monday!
 
Now Duncan has to make a choice—staying in his current school with the first boyfriend he’s ever had or leaving for the Underworld Academy and developing his magic. When you add the pressures of homework, bullies, puberty, and parental disappointment, Duncan figures the only way to help fix his problems is by casting a spell to ensure everything goes according to his plan.
